{"id":2629,"date":"2026-07-29T10:18:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T08:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africawildtruck.com\/itinerari\/viaggio-malawi-sud\/"},"modified":"2026-10-26T10:54:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T08:54:24","slug":"southern-malawi-travel","status":"publish","type":"itinerari","link":"https:\/\/www.africawildtruck.com\/en\/itinerari\/southern-malawi-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Journey through southern Malawi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-between-safaris-magical-mountains-and-crystal-clear-waters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between safaris, magical mountains and crystal-clear waters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the vast mosaic of the African continent lies a <strong>small country, immensely rich in landscapes and experiences<\/strong>: Malawi. <strong>Southern Malawi<\/strong> in particular is home to <strong>nature reserves<\/strong> where wildlife has returned to thrive after years of poaching, a <strong>mountain<\/strong> considered <strong>magical<\/strong> by local communities, the clear waters of the continent&#8217;s <strong>largest freshwater lake<\/strong>, and towns that tell the story of the country. A <strong>journey through southern Malawi<\/strong>, between safari, nature and culture, is something <strong>surprising<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-11-days-in-southern-malawi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">11 days in southern Malawi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The journey begins in <strong>Blantyre<\/strong>, <strong>Malawi&#8217;s oldest city<\/strong>, which since 2025 has been home to our second operational base, right next to the Italian Consulate. From here, we will head to <strong>Majete Wildlife Reserve<\/strong>. Until the early 2000s, this area had been decimated by poaching; today, thanks to collaboration between local communities, the Government of Malawi and African Parks, it is <strong>one of the continent&#8217;s most successful animal repopulation projects<\/strong>, with more than 2,500 animals reintroduced over twenty years. <strong>Day and night game drives<\/strong> will give you the chance to encounter the <strong>Big Five<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos<\/strong> \u2014 as well as <strong>cheetahs<\/strong>, <strong>African wild dogs<\/strong>, <strong>zebras<\/strong>, <strong>sable antelope<\/strong>, <strong>eland<\/strong> and many other species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will then continue towards the <strong>Mount Mulanje massif<\/strong>, at the foot of which stands our main base. Since 2025, Mount Mulanje has been a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>: at 3,002 metres, it is the <strong>highest peak in central Africa<\/strong> and harbours incredible biodiversity, with over 500 endemic plant species, including the Mulanje cedar, a symbol of Malawi. For local communities, it has always been a <strong>magical mountain, the subject of many legends<\/strong>. A short <strong>trek<\/strong> to the <strong>Mbiya Pools<\/strong> will let you discover this richness up close, while a <strong>walk through the tea plantations<\/strong> \u2014 introduced to the area as far back as the late nineteenth century \u2014 will be an opportunity to meet local workers. Either way, you can choose from all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africawildtruck.com\/en\/activities-guests\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2167\">activities<\/a> we offer guests at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africawildtruck.com\/en\/lodge-camp\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2189\">lodge &amp; camp<\/a> and, if you wish, you&#8217;ll have the chance to learn first-hand about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africawildtruck.com\/en\/around-awt-association-non-profit\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2190\">social responsibility projects<\/a> we carry out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we bid farewell to Mulanje, we will head to the <strong>beaches of Lake Malawi<\/strong>, in the Monkey Bay area. With crystal-clear waters reaching depths of up to 800 metres, the lake has also been a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> since 1984, and is home to the <strong>richest and most varied freshwater ecosystem on the planet<\/strong>: over 1,000 species of <strong>tropical fish<\/strong>, many from the <strong>cichlid<\/strong> family. Here you can enjoy relaxed, evocative moments among <strong>fishing villages<\/strong> where locals still paddle out in canoes, and a few hours of <strong>snorkelling<\/strong> in the clear waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the lake&#8217;s shores, we will make our way to <strong>Liwonde National Park<\/strong>, which stretches along the Shire River. Here too, the work of African Parks, begun in 2005, has enabled the reintroduction of lions, cheetahs and the black rhino, protected as an endangered species. A <strong>boat safari along the Shire<\/strong> is probably the most exciting experience you can have within the park: you may see <strong>elephants<\/strong> swimming just metres from the boat, as well as <strong>hippos<\/strong>, <strong>crocodiles<\/strong> and <strong>monkey<\/strong> families along the banks. Liwonde is also an Important Bird Area (IBA), a true paradise for <strong>birdwatching<\/strong> enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before returning to Blantyre in time for the flight home, the itinerary stops in <strong>Zomba<\/strong>, <strong>Malawi&#8217;s first capital<\/strong> during the colonial era, amid British-style architecture and the colourful market of local producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the 11-day journey, you will stay in <strong>lodges and camps chosen for their connection to the land<\/strong>: from the heart of the Majete bush to the Mulanje forest, all the way to the shores of Lake Malawi and the Shire River.
