A development project for Malawi
The Africa we know is made up of countless stories, dreams and projects. Since the beginning, Africa Wild Truck has supported local initiatives through collaborations with organisations working within local communities. Over time, however, we felt the need to become more directly involved and help give a voice to some of the stories that were particularly close to our hearts. This led to the creation of our own non-profit association in 2018, together with other partners who shared the same vision. Around AWT is our non-profit organisation. Its purpose is to support disadvantaged and underserved communities, helping them move towards long-term self-sufficiency.
The Nswadzi Primary School
The main project we have developed and continue to support is a primary school in Mulanje. The initiative began with a request from the village chief of the community closest to the Africa Wild Truck base. At the time, children had to walk up to six kilometres to reach the nearest school, a significant obstacle to regular attendance.
With the support of friends, volunteers and donors, we renovated an existing building and adapted it for educational use. Classrooms and sanitation facilities were created, and all the necessary school materials were provided. Before long, the Around Nswadzi Primary School opened its doors. Today, it welcomes around one hundred pupils and, alongside providing quality education in accordance with the curriculum of Malawi’s Ministry of Education, ensures that every child receives a free daily meal.
Other projects supported by Around AWT
We have organised volunteering experiences and community projects, supporting a variety of cultural and economic development initiatives. Among these projects, with the help of our tailors Margaret and Evance, we launched the production of handmade ethical gifts crafted from locally sourced cotton fabrics. We also partnered with the Malawian company Mother Earth Ltd to produce handmade soaps made entirely from plant-based ingredients. In addition, we established an open-access library within the primary school, available to both students and the wider Mulanje community.
