With the mountain behind it and the ocean before it
Cape Town is also called the “Mother City” because it’s the oldest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company and for many years it was the main gateway to southern Africa.
The city sits at the tip of the continent in a unique location in the world, with its back protected by Table Mountain and its gaze turned toward the Atlantic. From the top you get an exceptional view over the city and the ocean.
In the distance you can see Robben Island, where the former prison is located where Mandela spent 18 years in detention. Today the prison is a museum and a symbol of democracy’s triumph over oppression, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Behind the city you can visit the Winelands, which offer South Africa’s most renowned wine production. Following the coastline southwards, you eventually reach the Cape of Good Hope, first reached by Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias in 1487.
