Lilongwe, the modern capital of Malawi

Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, is also the country’s largest city and the centre of its economic activity and transport network. The city was developed between the late 1960s and early 1970s in preparation for its new role as the national capital, which it assumed in 1975 when it replaced the former colonial capital, Zomba. Although its urban development is relatively recent, Lilongwe retains many of the characteristics of a traditional African settlement.

It is a lively and sprawling city. Its older district is centred around a bustling market, where countless stalls sell everything from cooking pots and bicycle spare parts to dried fish.

Lilongwe is also rich in green spaces and cultural attractions. Located in central Malawi on the banks of the Lilongwe River, the city is home to the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which provides refuge and rehabilitation for injured and rescued wild animals. Not far from the city lies the Chongoni Rock Art Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring more than 127 locations where visitors can admire ancient rock paintings.
