Mikumi National Park

Extraordinary wildlife diversity

Easy to reach from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is often compared to Serengeti National Park because the landscape and ecosystems are very similar. The territory is characterized by a vast floodplain surrounded by a crown of mountains. The grasslands are dotted with baobabs, tamarind trees and acacias, which give way to miombo woodlands as you climb the slopes. Even though the most typical plant of this region is the borassus palm, which in the local language is called _mikumi_.

The plains are populated by yellow baboons, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and lions, while crocodiles and hippos crowd the waterholes. The wooded hills, instead, are the preferred habitat of various antelope species, like the greater kudu and sable antelope.

Mikumi National Park is a famous destination for safaris but also for birdwatching, because it hosts over 400 bird species. Among them, for example, you might spot the bateleur eagle, marabou stork, black-bellied bustard, lilac-breasted roller and several migratory birds from Europe during the rainy season: cattle egrets, African fish eagles, African wattled lapwings and many others.
