Windhoek, the capital of Namibia

Located in the heart of the country, Windhoek is Namibia’s capital city. For many travellers, it is the first stop on a journey through Namibia, offering an introduction to the German influence that has shaped parts of the country and becomes even more evident in places such as Swakopmund.

Originally, Windhoek was the residence of a Nama chief and an important centre for the trade in sheepskins. In 1892, however, it was chosen by Germany as the seat of the colonial administration. Today, numerous buildings in the historic centre still reflect the city’s German architectural heritage.
