In the 1600s, the Dutch East India Company arrived, and with them began the slave trade from Indonesia, Madagascar, India, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, the country’s mineral wealth attracted the British, who extended their rule over the territory. In short, centuries of cultural blending have led to the composition you see today. South Africa now has 11 officially recognized languages.
