A fishing village on the ocean, surrounded by beaches and marine life
Tofo is a small fishing village on the Ponta da Barra Peninsula in southeastern Mozambique, and it is also a well-known destination for travellers. Tofo Beach curves along the coast, creating a lively holiday atmosphere with its bars, restaurants and small local market. Those who prefer a quieter setting head to Tofinho Beach, which is smaller and ideal for surfing and fly-fishing.
Tofo is famous not only for the beauty of its beaches, but also for another reason: it is one of the world’s leading diving destinations. This is because coral reefs teeming with a wide variety of marine life lie just offshore. The shallower reefs are accessible even to less experienced divers and are home to colourful molluscs, crustaceans, groupers, turtles and rays. More experienced divers can descend to deeper waters to reach the manta ray cleaning stations.
Dolphins and whale sharks can be spotted both in the water and from the surface, while humpback whales can also be seen during the right season. On land, visitors can explore the villages around Tofo and go horseback riding among the dunes. To sample the local cuisine and take a dhow trip around the harbour, head to the nearby historic town of Inhambane.
