From Maputo to Tofo and Bazaruto: snorkeling and marine life
If you dream of a beach holiday in Mozambique, the country has around 2,500 kilometers of Indian Ocean coastline. This itinerary covers the southern stretch, from the capital, Maputo, to the beaches of Tofo, then on to Vilankulo and the Bazaruto Archipelago. The journey begins with a city steeped in colonial history. It then gives way to full days by the sea, with snorkeling, boat trips and encounters with the marine life of one of East Africa’s most biodiverse coastlines.
9 days in Mozambique: a taste urban life and plenty of sea
Your journey starts in Maputo, current Mozambique’s capital. Until 1976 it was known as Lourenço Marques, named after the Portuguese trader who first explored its bay in 1544. Maputo still preserves its colonial architecture, including Art Deco buildings, and is well worth a walk to discover the city center. Highlights include the Casa de Ferro, attributed to Gustave Eiffel, the Samora Machel monument, the Tunduru Botanical Garden, the Natural History Museum and the art market.
This itinerary is designed in particular for sea lovers. After one day in the city, you’ll head to Tofo, a small fishing village on the Ponta da Barra peninsula in southeastern Mozambique.
During your stay in Tofo, you’ll snorkel the coral reef, home to colorful fish and mollusks, crustaceans, turtles and rays. You can choose to dive deeper to explore the manta ray cleaning stations. On open-water excursions, you will look for the whale shark, the largest fish in the world. It can reach 12 meters in length and feeds on plankton. Tofo’s water are also home to dolphins and, from July to November, humpback whales.
After a few days, you will proceed up the coast to the town of Vilankulo, facing the Bazaruto Archipelago. This group of five islands, from the largest, Bazaruto, to tiny Bangue, is protected by Bazaruto National Park and African Parks. Covering 1,430 km², the archipelago is one of the most important marine sanctuaries on the East African coast. Its coastal dunes, coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows support more than 180 bird species and hundreds of fish species. Bazaruto is also the only known place in the western Indian Ocean where all five sea turtle species found in the region nest. While in Vilankulo, you will travel by boat to the islands of Bazaruto and Benguerra to snorkel at Two-Mile Reef, dive or go on a marine safari.
And speaking of safaris, if you’d like a change of scenery after all that sea, you can enrich your tour by extending it. You could head into Gorongosa National Park, also in Mozambique, or continue up to Malawi to enjoy its stunning nature.
