Mount Mulanje hiking adventure

.

Conquer the island in the sky through ancient legends and spectacular landscapes

Mount Mulanje is one of Malawi’s premier hiking destinations. Rising to 3,002 metres, its summit is the highest peak in Malawi and one of the highest mountains in Central Africa. Often shrouded in mist, it is known in Chichewa as the island in the sky. Yet Mount Mulanje is far more than a mountain to climb: it is a place of ancient legends, dramatic scenery and remarkable biodiversity.

A 5-Day trek across the Mulanje Massif

Mount Mulanje is crossed by a network of trails offering varying levels of difficulty. To reach Sapitwa Peak, the highest point on the mountain, we recommend a 4–5 day hike along a moderately challenging route. The itinerary remains flexible and can be adapted at any stage of the hike according to weather conditions, fitness levels and personal preferences.

The only vehicle transfers are between Blantyre Airport and the Africa Wild Truck Eco Lodge & Camp, located at the foot of the mountain. From our base at approximately 650 metres above sea level, the journey continues on foot. The trail begins among the region’s famous tea plantations before climbing through a landscape of forests, waterfalls, granite outcrops and mountain streams.

The massif is protected as the Mount Mulanje Forest Reserve, one of Malawi’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Hundreds of endemic species have been recorded here, including the iconic Mulanje cedar, Malawi’s national tree. The reserve is also home to more than 60 mammal species, numerous reptiles and rodents, over 230 butterfly species and around 300 bird species. In many ways, hiking Mount Mulanje is a safari on foot.

All treks are led by professional mountain guides certified by Malawi’s Ministry of Tourism and supported by experienced mountain porters. Accommodation is provided at the Africa Wild Truck Eco Lodge & Camp, before and after the trek. On the mountain, overnight stays take place in simple mountain huts located along the trail. These provide water, firewood and basic sleeping facilities with floor mattresses. Tents can also be provided upon request.

A Mount Mulanje hiking adventure is an experience not to be missed for anyone who loves the mountains and wants to discover a different side of Malawi. However, the country has much more to offer beyond the massif itself. After your trek, we can extend your journey with a few days relaxing on the shores of Lake Malawi or with a safari in one of Malawi’s leading protected areas, such as Liwonde National Park or Majete Wildlife Reserve. Alternatively, the Mount Mulanje trek can be added as an extension to any of our existing tours. Explore our itineraries and remember that every Africa Wild Truck journey can be tailored to your interests and travel style.
