Zambia safari in South Luangwa National Park

.

Discover extraordinary wildlife in the Luangwa Valley

If you dream of a safari in Zambia, this itinerary in South Luangwa National Park is designed to make that dream a reality. Among Zambia’s many protected areas, which celebrate the country’s remarkable wilderness, South Luangwa National Park stands out as a true natural sanctuary. The abundance of water supports a variety of ecosystems, ranging from woodland and open grasslands to lagoons and riverine habitats. This rich environment attracts an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. South Luangwa is home to more than 60 mammal species, including one of the highest leopard densities in Africa, as well as over 400 bird species. A true paradise for safari enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike.

3 camps e 9 days on safari in Zambia

To discover the natural sanctuary of South Luangwa, we propose a nine-day safari journey through the Luangwa Valley. Game drives take place during the coolest hours of the day, at first light and again in the late afternoon. Morning safaris offer the opportunity to observe elephant families crossing the river, hippo resting peacefully in the water and baboons grooming one another. You may also encounter Thornicroft’s Giraffe and Cookson’s Wildebeest, both endemic to the region, and, with a little luck, even a pack of African Wild Dog. During evening game drives, we focus on nocturnal birds and predators such as lions, hyenas and, above all, leopards.

In addition to traditional game drives, South Luangwa also offers walking safaris during the dry season. This activity allows for a deeper and more authentic connection with the natural environment.

Throughout the journey in Zambia, accommodation is provided in three different lodges located near the river. Staying in different areas of the park enriches the experience and allows for a broader exploration of its landscapes and wildlife.

To better suit your preferences, we can also arrange accommodation in a single lodge throughout the safari or extend the itinerary with additional days in Mount Mulanje, Lake Malawi or Zanzibar.

Things to know

Entry requirements

To enter Zambia, you will need a passport with at least two blank pages and a minimum of six months’ validity remaining. Visa requirements vary according to nationality and may change over time. We recommend consulting official travel advice before departure.

Food and drinks

Local cuisine

Zambian cuisine offers a variety of traditional dishes. Nshima, a maize-based staple food, is commonly served with meat, vegetables or fish. Other popular dishes include Ifisashi, (vegetables cooked in a peanut sauce), and Biltong, (dried cured meat).

Hygiene and safety

The accommodation and restaurants we select maintain high standards of hygiene. For additional peace of mind, we recommend:

  • Drinking water and beverages only from sealed containers or those supplied by your lodge.
  • Using bottled or lodge-supplied water when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoiding ice in drinks.
  • Avoiding uncooked vegetables and seafood.

Currency and payment

Local currency: Zambian Kwacha

Electronic payments and cash withdrawal facilities may be limited in remote and rural areas. For further information, please consult our travel preparation guide.

Health information

Travellers arriving from many European countries, including Italy, are generally not subject to mandatory vaccination requirements. For detailed advice on malaria prevention and health precautions, please refer to our travel preparation guide and official travel health resources.

What to bring

Luggage

We recommend travelling light and limiting luggage to approximately 16–18 kg. Soft bags are strongly preferred over hard-shell or semi-rigid suitcases.

Clothing

Comfortable, breathable clothing is recommended, with lightweight garments for daytime temperatures and layers for cooler evenings or higher elevations. Comfortable walking shoes, ideally hiking shoes, are recommended, together with sandals for relaxing after the day’s activities.

Essential equipment

Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a reusable water bottle and binoculars.

Remember to carry all travel documents required for entry into Zambia, together with a photocopy of your passport.

Medication

Pharmacies are generally only available in larger towns, so we recommend bringing a small supply of any medication you may require. A detailed packing list, including clothing, equipment and medical recommendations, is available in our travel preparation guide.
