Tanzania

Go on a trip to Tanzania and be amazed by a majestic Africa

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa. It is so vast that the Great Rift Valley splits it in two, creating a multitude of contrasting landscapes from the inland Great Lakes region to the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, from the snow-capped mountains in the north to remote parks in the south. A trip to Tanzania gives you the chance to discover an Africa that is varied, fascinating, wild, and often grand.

To get an idea of the majesty and variety that set this country apart, just look at some of its records and landmarks.

Situated in north-eastern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is the highest mountain in Africa. Nearby, the Ngorongoro Crater is 20 km in diameter and is the largest intact caldera on Earth. Each year the Serengeti National Park stages an epic and unique spectacle, the Great Migration, which involves almost two million animals. Dar es Salaam is one of East Africa’s principal ports and a genuinely contemporary metropolis, while on the shores of Lake Eyasi you can meet the Hadzabe, the last bushman community remaining in this part of the continent. The Indian Ocean washes 800 km of coastline and laps the shores of the Zanzibar archipelago, one of the most compelling destinations both scenically and culturally.

There are truly countless reasons to take a trip to Tanzania: this country is full of beauty and unforgettable experiences for everyone.

In the south of the country you’ll find Katavi National Park and Ruaha National Park, a remote and moving wildlife sanctuary rich in landscapes and wild animals. In the north, besides Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Park that we’ve already mentioned, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park also stand out. Today Tanzania has 23 national parks, 33 wildlife reserves, and 43 forest reserves: protected areas cover 28% of the country.

The parks and wildlife reserves are sought-after destinations for their extraordinary plant biodiversity, as well as for safaris and birdwatching.

Across these natural areas you can observe not only the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos and leopards, but also cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, the now rare African wild dogs, crocodiles, hippos and giraffes. Numerous antelope species are present too, including lesser kudu, eland, sable antelope, roan antelope and gerenuk, to name just a few.

Many primate species are concentrated mainly in the Udzungwa Mountains: with some luck you might encounter yellow baboons, mangabey and Iringa’s red colobus. Hundreds of bird species can also be found, from river and lake birds to migrants — flamingos, fish eagles, marabou storks and many more.

The mountain regions are ideal for hiking, while the coast offers white sands and clear waters for snorkelling and beach relaxation.
