Honeymoon in Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique

.

Through the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls and Indian Ocean beaches

A honeymoon in Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique unites three distinct souls of southern Africa into a unique experience, crafted for those seeking intimate contact with the most authentic nature combined with the comfort of exclusive accommodations. From the endless lagoons of the Okavango Delta to the breathtaking spectacle of Victoria Falls, and onward to the turquoise embrace of the Indian Ocean: 17 days to live an unforgettable adventure.

17 days on a honeymoon through Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique

The journey begins in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, where the Okavango river disperses into the Kalahari sands, forming a maze of channels, lagoons and islands. You’ll have the opportunity to explore this unique landscape from an exceptional vantage point, lodging for several days in the Khwai Private Reserve: an area of over 200,000 hectares bordering Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. Riverine forests and floodplains are home to elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and sable antelope, which you can encounter on game drives, walking safaris and mokoro excursions along the waterways.

The journey then continues to the northernmost area, a private mosaic of seasonal floodplains, palm islands and mopane woodlands, where camps are few and vehicles are very limited: a true opportunity to come face to face with nature. In this part of the Okavango Delta, longer transfers are made by light aircraft or helicopter: a suggestive way to admire from above the weave of channels and islands before experiencing them up close on safari.

After leaving Botswana, we head to Victoria Falls on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders,” the falls span nearly two kilometers with a drop of over one hundred meters and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the Zambian side, near Livingstone, you can choose adrenaline sport activities such as rafting, kayaking and bungee jumping, or enjoy the Zambezi river more serenely with a sunset cruise.

Lastly, after a short stop in Johannesburg, we fly to Vilankulo and from there to the final destination of your honeymoon: Mozambique’s idyllic beaches, facing the Indian Ocean. The town of Vilankulo is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, which covers 1,430 km² and is one of East Africa’s most important marine sanctuaries.

Coastal dunes, coral reefs and mangrove forests are home to more than 180 bird species and represent the only location in the western Indian Ocean where all five regional species of marine turtles nest. The archipelago’s five islands, from the largest, Bazaruto, to the tiny Bangue, are fringed by crystalline waters and white-sand beaches. Here the pace of travel slows: you can reach the islands aboard a traditional sailing dhow or by helicopter, choose to stay on one of the Bazaruto Archipelago islands protected by African Parks, go snorkeling among the reefs, or simply relax as a couple at a lodge overlooking a turquoise lagoon, enjoying beachfront dinners and the glow of a bonfire under the stars.

Over the 17 day journey you will be accommodated in exclusive establishments selected for their successful integration of luxury, authenticity, closeness to nature and a concrete commitment to conservation. From private accommodation on the Okavango Delta channels to a riverside lodge on the Zambezi, and luxury bungalows on Vilankulo’s lagoon, each property is chosen for its character and setting. You’ll have the rare chance to sleep on a skybed, an open-air platform overlooking a waterhole where you may spot elephants, lions and hyenas during the same night, sleeping beneath the African stars.

Things to know

Entry requirements

For Botswana, depending on your nationality, a visa may be required for tourist stays. There is an entry fee of USD 30 per person, preferably paid in cash, which goes towards land and wildlife conservation. Visas may be required for Zambia and Mozambique, depending on your nationality.

If you visit Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side as well and plan to cross the border, there is the Kaza Univisa which allows travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe for 30 days, costing USD 50 per person.

For all mentioned countries the passport must have at least 6 months’ validity remaining and several blank pages. To check the most up-to-date entry requirements and how to apply, we recommend consulting official travel advice before departure.

Food and drinks

Local cuisine

The staple ingredients of Botswana cuisine are beef and mutton. In more remote areas meals tend to be simpler, based on grains and porridge, while lodges and camps typically offer high-quality international cuisine.

Zambian cuisine features a variety of dishes, including nshima (maize porridge), which is often served with meat, vegetables or fish. Other popular dishes include ifisashi (vegetables cooked in a peanut sauce) and biltong (dried cured meat).

Mozambique offers one of the richest cuisines in Africa, blending Portuguese, Indian and African influences: prawns, lobsters and the catch of the day are often grilled and flavored with coconut milk and piri-piri chili.

Hygiene and safety

The accommodation and restaurants we select maintain high standards of hygiene. For additional peace of mind, we recommend:

  • Drinking water and beverages only from sealed containers or those supplied by your lodge.
  • Using bottled or lodge-supplied water when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoiding ice in drinks.
  • Avoiding uncooked vegetables and seafood

Currency and payments

Currency in Botswana: Pula
Currency in Zambia: Zambian Kwacha
Currency in Mozambique: Metical

At the accommodations you’ll stay in, Visa, Mastercard and other major credit cards are commonly accepted. In markets and villages, however, electronic payments are often limited and ATMs may be scarce. For more details, please consult our travel preparation guide.

Health information

Vaccination requirements vary according to nationality and country of origin. For up-to-date health information and malaria prevention advice, we recommend consulting official travel health resources before departure.

What to bring

Luggage

Light-aircraft transfers within Botswana are subject to strict weight and baggage rules (generally only soft-sided bags are accepted, not hard suitcases). Specific limits will be confirmed during the booking process. We also advise travelling with only essential luggage.

Clothing

On safari in Botswana and Zambia, wear comfortable, breathable clothes in neutral colours that blend with the environment, and bring a couple of warm layers for cool mornings and evenings. For Mozambique’s beaches, stick to light summer clothes and a swimsuit, and pack a warmer top for the cooler nights between June and August.

Essential equipment

Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars and a camera: both the Okavango Delta and the Bazaruto Archipelago offer views worth capturing. Remember your travel documents and a photocopy of your passport.

Medication

Pharmacies are generally only available in larger towns, so we recommend bringing a small supply of any medication you may require.

A detailed packing list, including clothing, equipment and medical recommendations, is available in our travel preparation guide.
